The plot of the story centers on two couples drinking gin as they discuss and engage one another on the meaning of love. Carver’s 1981 collection of short stories is a haunting meditation on three major themes, namely love, relationship, and feeling in marriage. The geographic location of Carver’s story is Albuquerque, New Mexico. ‘What We Talk about When We Talk about Love’ calls to mind some of the many forms of love-unconditional, romantic, affectionate, sensual, as well as spiritual love. It is against this background that this research paper critically looks into Carver’s development of the three themes mentioned above, and some of the literary devices employed in the story.
