The Quest for Rainbow Bagel

The Quest for Rainbow Bagel really showed how the social model of disability is holding so many individuals back in life. The social model of disability is that the person is only as disabled as their environment around them. If the environment is not accessible it makes a person disabled. The medical model of disability is the impairments that people may be born with or happen to them during their life. The book El Deafo was very intriguing to me. As a book itself, I thought the feeling and look of the book was inviting. It was very colorful throughout the pages. The cover was simple but had a clear message. The hearing device was evident in all of the illustrations and throughout the text. It seemed like a big graphic novel, but I had no trouble continuing reading it. The story was interesting and I liked the differences in all of the characters and how they played a part in the plot. Cece was a very strong lead character and I enjoyed how the whole story centered on her feelings and experience. When I got to the end I especially loved the authors note. While she wrote about her experience she specifically went about it as everyones experience with hearing impairment is not her story to tell. She said, In other words, there are lots of different ways to be deaf. And there is no right or wrong way. (Bell, pg. 235) I loved how vulnerable and honest she was in it, citing how she felt during her childhood and how incredible personal each persons experience is. El Deafo won a few awards. It won Newbery Honor in 2015 and the Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids in 2015(ages 8-12). El Deafo was also the first graphic novel to be shortlisted for the Newbery Medal. I think the fact that El Deafo was written in graphic novel form was perfect for the story line. The main point Cece Bell was trying to make is that El Deafo is the superhero name because Ceces hearing device is her superpower. To fully get this feeling and idea across, the pictures give it the full effect. When Cece is feeling unhappy or insecure in a situation she morphs into El Deafo to say what she needs to say. This is really brought to life by the big illustrations during these parts. For example, when she is secretly crushing on her new neighbor, Mike Miller, she would transform to El Deafo in her mind to build up the courage to interact with him. One specific time is when she was on the trampoline and he approaches her. (Bell, pg. 137-140) I think the message that assistive technology is very important in a school classroom setting is strongly sent in this book. There are multiple times that Cece is unable to participate or having trouble participating because of the failure of her technology or the failure of school professionals to work with her assistive technology. When the gym teacher drops her hearing device so carelessly it gave me so many feelings. (Bell, pg. 170-171) It is so important for a school to work with a child so that they have success while in the academic setting. In some of my research I read, With increased access, a child will gain a greater fund of knowledge that will lead to stronger language competence and therefore improved educational outcomes. (Johnson and Thibodeau) This is a topic I feel very strongly about. The work I do in Early Intervention really ties into this story and any story of this nature. It emphasizes on the idea of inclusion and how much work the world has left to do for us to really make living accessible to all abilities. Books like El Deafo introduces the idea that not everyone is the same but most people just want to live their life feeling included.

RESPOND TO THE SECOND POST:
The princess was depressed in the booking reading YouTube video of The Princess and the Fog. In the medical model, her depression constituted a medical handicap of depression, whereas, in the social model, everyone goes through difficult times, and talking about or finding strategies to cope with these feelings is necessary and entirely acceptable.
El Deafo is a 277-page hardcover book that I checked out from the library. It has a nice texture and a brilliant blue color cover with a cape-wearing figure in the sky in the medium-sized book. Cece Bell dedicated this book to her extraordinaire parents, George, and Barbara Bell. In the final pages of her story, she mentions a note, which talks about how there are many different ways people can become deaf. She addresses that there are different amounts of deafness and different ways people deal with this. She explains that the book El Deafo takes readers through her journey of becoming deaf and how it has created her into the person she is today. She notes that being deaf was oddly enough a gift and that her unique difference from the world turned out the be the best part of her. In the end, she states, “Our differences are our superpowers.” In 2015, El Deafo won the John Newbery Medal, which is a metal for one of the best children’s books. This book is written like a graphic novel, and Cece Bell utilizes blank speech bubbles to explain how she became deaf, which is a unique feature of the book (Bell, pg. 108 + 109). She shows how the words start to fade into grey and then become blank white circles with no writing in them.
After reading this story, I found ways to relate to Cece’s story. I was diagnosed was a hearing disability at an early age. I had to start wearing hearing aids when I was around five years old. In the story, there was a segment about Cece getting a hearing test, which was always very tough for me at a young age and I hated seeing my score after. I used to hate wearing my hearing aids to school when I was younger, but I have now learned that my hearing disability makes me unique just like Cece did with her deafness. I felt that I could relate to many of the situations that she was in, especially with all the questions and comments about it. I knew a lot about hearing disabilities, but I never knew what it was like to be fully deaf, and I felt like this story did a great job portraying it for a person dealing with being deaf.
