Twenty-five percent of your grade in DVRS1101  will be based on your reflectionand analysis essay on a Harvard University Implicit Association Test, availableonline at:

 

An implicit association test measures yourimplicit (not-necessarily-conscious) association of negative and positiveattributes of people who may be similar or different from you in attitudes,experiences or life situations.  The ideabehind an implicit association test is that there may be a difference betweenour conscious and our unconscious beliefs about instances, examples orrepresentations of diversity.  Yourassignment is to take ONE implicitassociation test from the following categories on the Harvard IAT above:

 

Arab-Muslim, Age, Religion, Gender-Career,Race, Sexuality, Disability, Skin Tone, Gender-Science, Asian American, NativeAmerican

 

Then, after taking the test you will writein class a typed, double-spaced reflection essay of 500-750 words, based on thequestion below for thisassignment.  The essay is used to assessthe achievement of the learning outcome that Students will be able to describe the role of social diversity inshaping their own attitudes or values regarding appreciation, tolerance orequality of others.

Question (This must appear in theSyllabus).:

 

 

Please explain, a.) what the implicitassociation test claimed were the implicit preferences of the student on thetopic selected, between the subtopics within the assessment. (For example, theReligion test evaluated the test-takers relative views of Christianity,Hinduism, Judaism and Islam; the essay here would show what order the IATindicated were the test-takers preference between these four).  And, b) assume, just for the purposes ofcompleting the essay (and pretend if you need to),  that the results do in fact reflect realconditioning in the form of cultural, social, personal and generational eventsthat have a cause and effect relationship with your test scores. To achieve thebest grade your answer will explain what these events might be if the test results are or were accurate. This exercisedoes not assume that you agree with the test results, or that you agree thatthe results of implicit association are correct in your case. Whether you agreeor not, you are asked to explain what forms of conditioning would cause aperson to have those results if they were in fact conditioned in a social,cultural or generational way by them. 

 

 

The grade that  will result from this assignment will be usedin two different ways. Since the assessment is out of 5 points, the raw 1-5grade will be used to assess the course. But the grade will also be converted to a 100-point scale and counttoward your grade, with each point worth 20 points, so that a 5-point score isworth 100 points, a 4-point score is worth 80 points, and so on.  This grade out of 100 points is part of yourgrade in the course and it is worth 25% of your course grade.

 

The grade will not be based on youropinion but on the degree to which you answer all parts of the question, areclear in your answer and fulfill the requirements of the rubric.

 

Requirementsof the Rubric:

 

5 Points:

 

To earn 5 points (100%), the student must answerboth a) and b) in the question clearly and logically. The essay will be atleast 500 words, and  all sentences willbe complete. If there are any grammatical errors they will not interfere withthe meaning of the sentences.

 

4 points:

 

To earn 4 points (80%), the student mustanswer both a) and b) in the question clearly and logically. The essay will beat least 500 words, and most sentences will be complete. There may be a fewgrammatical errors but no more than one such error will interfere with themeaning of the sentences.

 

3 points:

 

To earn 3 points (60%), the student willanswer a) OR b) in the question clearly and logically, but not both. The essaywill be 500 or almost 500 words, and most sentences will be complete. There maybe more than a few  grammatical errorsbut no more than two such errors will interfere with the meaning of thesentences.

 

 

 

2 points (40%):

 

To earn 2 points, the student will answeneitherr a) OR b) in the question clearly and logically, but some goodinformation will be provided. The essay be only 250-300 words or lessThere maybe many grammatical errors and an egregious lack of proofreading.

 

 

1 point (20%):

 

An essay with some redeeming informationbut which omits most of what was expected. A 1 essay will be unclear most of the time, vague and ungrammatical mostof the time, and full of irrelevant comments indicating that little or nothing waslearned from the assignment. There will be some, but very, very little evidencefrom the composition of the essay  thatthe test was actually taken.  There willbe little or no evidence of reflection.

 

0 point:

 

An essay that contains nothing relevant andprovides no indication that the test was taken or its nature understood in anyway. A plagiarized essay will also receive a 0. An essay with some correctinformation will not receive a 0 unless it is plagiarized.

 

 

Performance Target:

 

85% or more of students will score atleast a 4 on the assessment.
