Writing a Persuasive Speech Outline on Texting while driving

The purpose of this assignment is to construct the written (verbal) part of your persuasive speech. Your outline must include the following:

  • A specific purpose statement
  • A central idea or thesis statement
  • An introduction written out word-for-word as the Attention Step in Monroes Motivated Sequence.
  • Main points organized as Problem and Solution (Monroes Motivated Sequence)
  • Sub-point that support your main points

  • Transitional statements to connect the main parts of the speech
  • Conclusion as Visualization and Actions Steps (Monroes Motivated Sequence)
  • Reference page with a minimum of 5 references that are cited in the speech.
Outline steps:
1. Write out the specific purpose of the speech.  It should begin with To persuade my audience about/to then as specifically as possible write out what you want your audience to learn from the speech.
2. Write out the central idea or thesis statement.  It should be a complete sentence in which your speech topic is the subject and the main points are the predicate.  IT SHOULD ONLY BE ONE SENTENCE.

Speech Body
3. Write out the main points of the speech based on the thesis statement.  These should be in Roman numerals (I., II., III., etc.).  They should be complete sentences.  One sentence for each main point.  For the persuasive speech, the main points should be I.  Problem:, II.  Solution  You can add additional main points that, but they must relate to either the problem or the solution or both.  For example:
  1. Symptoms of the Problem
  2. Problem
  3. Solution
or
  1. Problem
  2. Solution
  3. How the solution could work in real life (Visualization step in Monroe)
4. Write out the supporting material as subpoints for your main points.  They should be in capital letters (A., B., C.,).  These are the facts and ideas you have gleaned from your research.  Make sure that you cite them in your outline.  All main subpoints should also be in complete sentences.  Subpoints support and/or explain main ideas.  They can facts, statistics, illustrations, examples, short narratives, or even jokes.  You may need to break the subpoints down into sub-sub points using Arabic numbers (1., 2., 3., etc).  An outline should not have any long paragraphs unless the paragraph is an anecdote or a story.
 Introduction
5. Once you have the body for the speech, write out the introduction word-for-word.  A complete introduction (a) gets the audience attention concerning the problem you will address, (b) identifies the topic, (c) orients the audience to the topic, (d) establishes your credibility, and (e) previews the main points.
 Conclusion
6. At the end of the speech, write out your conclusion word-for-word.  Remember, the conclusion must include a visualization (if not included in the problem step) and call to action.  Again, do not present any new ideas in the conclusion.
 Transitions
7. Finally add transitional phrases or sentences between the main sections of the speech (Introduction, Body, and Conclusion) as well as between the main points.  Transitions usually review what youve just said and preview what you are going to say.
 References
8. Add a reference sheet.  Under the title References, list the sources you have used in the speech using APA format.
 Final Draft
9. Arrange the final draft of your speech into the following order for submission on Blackboard:
  1. Title
  2. Specific purpose
  3. Central Idea or Thesis Statement
  4. Introduction (with transition)
  5. Speech body (Main points and supporting subpoints with transitions)
  6. Conclusion (with transition)
  7. References (on a separate page)
