College sports is big business. College student-athletes potentially bring in millions of dollars for their colleges, universities, and coaching staff every year. Indeed, the highest-paid member of any university is likely not to be the professor of the year or even the college president, but the football coach. Some people argue that, given the athletes’ restriction on employment, that they should be given a stipend or even be paid members of the university staff. Others argue that paying student-athletes devalues the concept of what it means to be a student athlete.
In an essay to be read by a college and university level audience, argue for or against paying college athletes for the services that they render for the university and the communities in which they live.
There is some controversy over whether or not American students should be required to take foreign language classes in school. Some believe that English will be the universal language, so the need for Americans to learn foreign languages is wasted time that could be spent on other material that needs to be taught and learned. Others argue that knowing more than one language will be necessary for economic survival in the future in addition to the many educational benefits in studying another language.
In an essay to be read by elementary and high school curriculum designers, argue for or against requiring students to take foreign language classes. Similarly, avoid using the 2nd person pronoun (“you”). It’s too informal and accusatory.
