Please seeCourse Schedule for Individual Due DatesJ
MLA ResearchProject
IMPORTANT:
This is a FINAL Research Paper! I do not accept revisions orregrade this paper once I have graded this.
This paper is required for Comp IICourses. Students who fail to submit a Final Research Paper with MLADocumentation will earn an F for the course, regardless of the final gradeshown in the gradebook.
Students who fail to submit a paperwith MLA Documentation and ELR sources will earn an F for the course, regardless of the final grade shown in the gradebook.
* I strongly urge you to print this and use it as a check listfor your paper!
Pre-Writing Documentsto prepare your final research project are:
1. Preliminaryresearch in the Electronic Library Databases (ELR) sources from open websearches, .com websites, schmoop, google scholar, cliff notes, web notes, Wikipedia,or any similar websites are not permitted.
2. Aminimum of three articles and summaries with one proposed thesis statement forpaper
3. Outlinefor the research paper
4. Revisionon the thesis statement as needed
5. WorksCited that includes a minimum of three and a maximum of 5 scholarly sourcesfrom the ELR and the short story you have chosen to analyze
6. TheFinal Research Paper must be a minimum of 3 full pages and a maximum of 5 fullpages plus Works Cited.
7. WorksCited will be the final page of your paper and is not included in the minimum 3full page count.
8. Paperssubmitted without Works Cited will earn a zero; this final paper is a researchassignment, so students who submit a paper without this element have notfulfilled the minimum requirement for the assignment and the paper will not begraded.
ProjectSpecifics:
The Goal: towrite a literary analysis paper using scholarly sources that proves a thesis inresponse to one question in regard to one of the approved short stories.
Length of thePaper: Minimum of three (3) complete pages that does not exceed five(5) pages. Works Cited is required andis in addition to these 3-5 pages and must be included as the final page(s) ofthe Final Research Paper or the paper will not be graded.
MLAFormat: All work is required tobe submitted in MLA format, 8th edition, and must be double spaced. Please use the MLA template I have provided for your writing or set up yourpage as required by MLA 8th edition.
MLADocumentation: This is a research paper, not an opinion paper. The requiredresearch must be included and documented properly using scholarly sources fromthe Electronic Library Databases, and student must illustrate a mastery ofbasic MLA Documentation skills.
The Voice: Academicresearch is written in third person voice.
Do not use first person voice: I, me, my, we, our or I think,I feel, in my opinion
Do not use the vague pronoun one
Do not use second person voice: you, your, yourself
Due Date: All due datesfor assignments are listed in each weeks module and in your course calendar.
TheThesis: The thesis is one single sentence atthe end of the introductory paragraph that states what the paper will provethrough analysis. The thesis answers the question you have asked of yourresearch.
Databases forresearch: Research through the ELR is required, and no open web sourcesmay be used. Multi-database searches are helpful, but these are the literarydatabases I suggest:
Blooms Literature Literature Criticism Online LiteratureResources from Gale
JSTOR LiteraryReference Online SageJournals Booksand Authors
Lit Finder LiteraryReference Center Plus SalemLiterature
If you have never conducted scholarly academicresearch, I suggest meeting with a librarian for help. My face to face classeswill meet in the library for an orientation on research, and I will invite myonline students to attend.
Sources: You must usethe following sources in your research paper:
1. The short story: quotes from the short story must be cited inthe body of your paper
2. A minimum of three scholarly articles and a maximum of fivescholarly articles retrieved from written by scholarly PHSCs ELR databases. These sources will support your thesis.
3. If you consult a dictionary or your textbook for definitions orexpository information, you must include these on Works Cited and cite thatmaterial in the body of your paper.
WorksCited: Once you finalize the scholarly sources you will use in theresearch paper you will compose Works Cited. Follow the directions in yourtextbook if you have the MLA 8th edition updates or the directionsin for MLA Documentation,8th edition.
WARNING: This is afundamental skill required for the course. If you choose to copy and pastelinks or EasyBib/pre-written citations, you have not fulfilled the minimumrequirement for MLA Documentation.
Integratingsources into the paper: The paper should be no more than 15 20% quoted materialfrom the short story itself and from the scholarly sources you have chosen. Iam interested in your analysis, but your ideas and analysis must be supportedby text from the short story or by scholarly sources. Do not select lengthyquotes from the short story. Paraphrase or choose short, brief sections of thestory to quote that wont weigh down your paper with text from the story.Always assume the reader of your paper knows the story well, so the quotes usedshould be brief and specific, not lengthy and not used to retell plot orsequence of events.
Outline:
1. Introductory Ideas
a. Thesis statement (1 singlesentence)
2. Body Paragraph 1: Main Idea #1 (you should have about 2-3 quotesin this paragraph, but no more than that, and each quote must be followed witha few sentences of analysis)
a. Support for Main Idea 1
i. Analysis
b. Support for Main Idea 1
i. Analysis
c. Support for Main Idea 1
i. Analysis
3. Body Paragraph 2: Main Idea #2 (you should have about 2-3 quotesin this paragraph, but no more than that, and each quote must be followed witha few sentences of analysis)
a. Support for Main Idea 2
i. Analysis
b. Support for Main Idea 2
i. Analysis
c. Support for Main Idea 2
i. Analysis
4. Body Paragraph 3: Main Idea #4 (you should have about 2-3 quotesin this paragraph, but no more than that, and each quote must be followed witha few sentences of analysis)
a. Support for Main Idea 3
i. Analysis
b. Support for Main Idea 3
i. Analysis
c. Support for Main Idea 3
i. Analysis
5. You may have a fourth body paragraph if you have another MainIdea to analyze.
6. Conclusion: The conclusion cannot contain any quotedmaterial and must not introduce any new material. The job of the conclusion isto summarize all ideas presented, restate the thesis in a new way, and end withsome type of wrap up that brings together the entire paper.
Transitions: I expect you touse college level transitions to move from one paragraph to the next and fromone idea to the next. Please be more creative with transitions than First,Second, Third, Next, Finally, In conclusion.
Literary Analysis: Your textbookdoes a good job of explaining literary analysis. I want to see connectionsbetween the research youve found and the ideas youve presented to supportyour thesis. Critical analysis is the biggest difference between thinkers andcopiers. It is up to you to think about the story, think about what thescholars write about the story, and make connections. For instance, why doesHemingways Iceberg Theory work in this story? How does Hemingway manage togive the readers so little information regarding the conflict betweencharacters yet create a compelling tale that readers want to debate? What is itabout his writing that draws readers into the short story and causes readers tochoose sides? What about Hemingways writing makes this story relevant nearly acentury later? Why is the story controversial? When you include a quote fromeither the short story or from a scholar, it is your job to analyze why thatquote is important, what it reveals, and what the deeper meaning is.
Writersand gardeners work in groups of three. Think about this as you create mainideas, minor ideas, supporting details, and analysis. End each paragraph on your own words, not a quote, paraphrase, summary, or in-text citation. This will elevate your writing evenfurther. The purpose of a quote is to support your ideas, so the end of eachparagraph should always return to your own voice and connect the ideas youvepresented. Failing to address the reason why a quote is included in the paperis failing to do your job as a researcher. If you have nothing to say, nothingto connect to the quote, then find a different quote.
Words of Wisdom:
1. Do not Procrastinate!! I will not accept late papers. This includes submitting anincomplete file, the wrong file, or a blank file and upon seeing the gradeposted, telling me you had the paper done all along, but you submitted thewrong file! It is your responsibility to be sure you are submitting the correctpaper by the due date.
2. Proofread and Revise again andagain. Once you have submitted your final paper, read it again. You canresubmit your paper as many times as youd like until the due date passes. I gradethe most recent submission, so if you find an error after youve submitted the paper, upload a revision. If you find another error, revise again. This is a goodthing, not a bad thing, and I love to see you re-reading and revising!
3. Do not spend any sentence summarizing the work youvechosen to analyze. I do not want to read this happened, and then thishappened, and then they did this, and when this happened, Always assume thereader/audience of your paper (your professor) knows the work well. In highschool, you may have been asked to summarize readings or novels; in college, weassume you have read the work and we are looking for analysis, not summary.
4. The research paper is not an author biography. While youmay connect a specific incident in an authors life to the short story, theliterary analysis is NOT an author biography. Do not spend time retelling thestory of an authors life.
WorksCited:
Works Cited begins at the top of the next new page
The short story must be included on Works Cited
A minimum of three sources from at least 2 different databasesin the ELR is required
You may use a dictionary or your textbook as a source fordefinitions, but these will be additional sources not included in the minimumrequired number of sources
Works Cited must follow the most recent MLA Documentation format
Sources must be cited following examples for the type of sourceyou are citing
Works Cited must be double spaced and use a hanging indentformat
Sources listed on Works Cited should be listed in alphabeticalorder and NOT numbered
You mayNOT use Wikipedia, Answers.com, About.com, Schmoop University (not auniversity), Helium, SparkNotes, Associated Content, Wikipedia, websites thatsell papers or charge an access fee, open web/Google searches, or any sourcethat is obtained outside of PHSCs Electronic Library Databases (ELR).
FinalSubmission:
The Final Research Paper with Works Cited mustbe uploaded to the appropriate module by the due date. I will not accept orgrade papers that are attached to an email or given to me in my office. Allpapers must be submitted to the correct module by the due date or you will earna zero for the paper.
While I am happy to answer specific questionson your research paper, I do not read and give feedback on papers prior tograding them. This is what the tutors at the ASC can do for you as well as thetutors at Smarthinking Tutoring.
Citing Sources:
Every single source used in the paper must belisted on the Works Cited page, and every phrase or sentence that is writteninto the paper that is not your original idea must be cited.
Papers that do not follow instructions willnot be accepted.
Do Not Use a bibliography maker or copy/paste acitation from the database onto Works Cited. You may use these as a place tobegin, but you will not earn credit for the MLA Documentation grade withincorrect, copied citations or a list of links on Works Cited.
BlockQuote: Please be selective and limited in the length of quotes. Do notinsert long passages of quoted material into the body of this short, 3-5 pagepaper. If you must use a lengthy quote that reaches 4 lines of text in yourpaper, you must use Block Quote format. Please refer to your text book forthese directions or use for directions.
Grammar andLanguage Use: Grammar, punctuation, spelling, and overall presentation areall graded in this research project. Avoid slang, informal language, andabbreviations.
GettingHelp:
PHSC offers free tutoring for students. I urge you to meet with a tutorseveral times during the process of writing the research paper. Ask for helpwith punctuation, grammar, content, organization.
Smarthinking Tutoring is also provided by the college and is another freetutoring service for students.
PHSC Librarians are available to help you with research, MLA Documentation, and Citing Sources.
You may make an appointment with me during office hours for help with thepaper, but I do not accept emailed papers to read and comment on. This iscalled grading the paper, and I will do this when you submit the paper for agrade. However, I am happy to help with specific questions and direction.
Finally, remember that the paper is your work. You have the finalsay on the product you submit for a grade. You cannot blame the ASC for errors, misinformation, or lack of earning a higher grade on the paper. The end resultis based on what you have learned, read, and interpreted; it is your grade, notthe grade of a tutor, family, or friend. If you are unsure about advice orsuggestions youve been given, ask questions.
Plagiarism: papers that I deem plagiarized will earn a zero. Plagiarized papers arenot eligible for resubmission or a second attempt. If you plagiarize, you will earna zero for the paper and an F for the course, be referred to the AcademicDisciplinary Committee, be required to take a course on plagiarism beforeregistering for the next semester, and have to repeat the course.
