Critical Response Papers

Instructions 

Students are required to submit 2,1 page critical responses to selected course readings.  Critical responses must be typed(double-spaced, font size-12, Times Roman), addressing a course reading.  Critical responses must have a thesis.  In addition, students must develop claimsthat support their thesis.  Lastly,students must support their claims with evidence from course readings or othercredible sources.  An outline is providedbelow as a guideline.  The due date foreach response paper is listed in the course outline section of thesyllabus.  Students are free to choosefrom readings that are scheduled on the due dates. Late papers will not beaccepted.  Students must submit theirfinal draft via the turnitin link posted in the content section (in theassignments folder) on blackboard. Consistent with the legacy of Africana Studies, this course demandsacademic excellence.

2.     Identify the main points of the article

3.     Develop your Thesis/Focus or Central Argument (Lastsentence in the first paragraph)

1.        Introduce major claims that support your thesis orcentral argument

2.        Provide examples/illustrations that support your claim

3.        Discuss implications of your claim

o   Conclusion

1.     Summarize your major claims

2.     Draw your final Conclusions

1.     Review your paper and verify that your central analysisanswers the following question:

African Americans and Education

Lectures will focus on educationand the Africana community in the United States.  Class discussions will explore the concept ofmis-education and the role culture plays in the educational process.
