Historical Inquiry

Pleaseread part 1 & 2, and use them for brainstorming and instructions (Please follow the attached “History Inquiry Outline.pdf” file to write the paper). The final product –Part 3 is what I need (but need to followthe outline I did for part 1 and al so address the questions from part 2).

Pleaseuse the uploaded documents as resources (Mirel, 2010; Burkholder,2011; Tyack, 1974; Selden, 2000; Gutfreund, 2017; Kibler are the most relevant) and other resources attached you think arerelevant and necessary (use APA in-text citation). Please follow the outline I provided and clearlyaddress the all prompts and questions (such as conceptual shift connections or implications). The last part of reflection and implication needs to connect to: contemporary issues and problems such as higher education opportunities, isolation, cultural difference, inequality, and internalized racism in schools.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!

Part 1

The final product for this course will ask you to situateyour topic, or concepts related to your topic, historically in the literature.

For the first part of this assignment, I am simply askingyou to trace the conceptual history of your topic. This can take many shapesand forms and will be dependent on the topic or concepts. I envision some sortto graphic representation, however, a written narrative form would also beeffective. “History” in this assignment is relative to the topic andconcepts themselves, and you may want to limit the amount of concepts youidentify to those you can fully justify, as you will be using this conceptualhistory in Part 2 of this assignment – where you will discuss why these wereimportant/significant conceptual progressions for both your topic and the fieldof education. Therefore, Part 1 serves as the brainstorming step for Part 2 andthe final product.

Part 2

For Part 2 of this assignment, you will consider theconceptual shifts or connections you identified in Part 1 and discuss why thesewere important or significant conceptual progressions for both your topic, yourspecific area of study, and the field of education.

For example, going back to my example on agency I mightdiscuss the shift from self-efficacy to agency, which was made most notablyby Albert Bandura. In thinking about this shift, I might ask and addressquestions such as:

What did the concept of self-efficacy help us understandabout teaching?

What could the concept of self-efficacy not explain aboutteaching?

How are the concepts self-efficacy and agency different?

What can theconcept of agency help us understand that self-efficacy could not?

For this part of the assignment, I also ask that youconsider the current concepts that are being used for your topic andcontemplate why these are the most appropriate, popular, or utilized terms for yourtopic. These could range from very simple answers, such as, the concepts mimiccurrent language in standards; to more academic reasons, such as, the conceptcombines two older concepts or ideas; to much more complex reasons, such as,language or cultural understanding shifts, increased inclusivity, or byproducts of policies. These contemplations should draw from your reading of theliterature and any claims supported by literature.

For the second part of this assignment, you will besynthesizing the implications of the conceptual shifts or connections for yourtopic, area of research, and field of education. Some possible questions to askor address might include:

Have the conceptual shiftsclarified or improved the concept as a tool for improving instruction orunderstanding education issues? How? Why?

Have the conceptual shiftsresulted from, or raised new, significant questions? Explain.

Have the conceptual shiftscreated a lack of consensus, or ambiguity, about the concept or your topic (i.e.teacher beliefs)?

Are the conceptual shifts theresult of competing epistemologies, ideologies, or schools of thought or bestpractice on your topic? Therefore, there will be two distinct parts for thispart of the assignment:

1. Discussion andContemplation of conceptual shifts or connections

2. Implications ofConceptual Shifts The product for this part of the assignment can take anyform.

Please keep in mind that the final product will be inwritten narrative form, and this part will be in included, so for efficiencysome may choose to submit this in written form. In written form, the averagelength would be 2-5 pages depending upon how many conceptual shifts orconnections you discuss.

Part 3

For theFinal Part of this assignment, you will be combining Parts 1 and 2 togetherinto a written narrative. In addition, I ask that you reflect on theimplications of the conceptual history of your topic and consider how it willshape or inform your own work or research. There will be three roughly definedparts of your narrative:

1.Conceptual History (1 page)

2.Conceptual Shifts or Connections and Conceptual Shift Implications (2 page)

3.Reflection and Implications for your own Research (1 page)

Again, these are rough categories and length estimates. Your narrative can beorganized however you see fit, as long as these aspects are discussed. Pleaseuse APA guidelines for citations and references (APA).
