You are part of a committee tasked with choosing/recommending a new EHR (or

upgrading an existing system) in a health care setting. You may choose the

setting. It may be a setting in which you currently work or one in which you

would like to work.

Gather information online and from current scholarly literature to choose/

propose a new system or an upgrade an existing system. Utilize concepts of

information and change theories to analyze, design, implement, and evaluate the

implementation or upgrade. The body of your paper should be 4-6 pages long

(size 12 font) and in APA format. Please use a minimum of 5 scholarly

references/resources from the last five years.

Analyze the EMR information system including the following:

• HITECH Act and the importance of informatics

• Name of the EMR (ie Meditech, Cerner, Epic, Obix)

• Describe the organization/setting (hospital, ambulatory care, or a

system designed for use in on a specific unit within a hospital (ie Obix for

OB or Optum for ED). Remember that there may be a need for an

interface if a system is not in use throughout an entire facility.

• Identify users/stakeholders (nursing, lab, pharmacy, physicians,

financial services, and so forth). Discuss the multidisciplinary exchange of

information in terms of promoting collaboration and patient safety.

• Identify required training and plan for go-live (“big bang” vs. phasing in).

Include a change theory in your plan for implementation. You may use

one of the models listed below or propose one found in the literature:

• The Change Curve Model

• Kotter and Cohen’s Model of Change

• Diffusion of Innovations

• The Transtheoretical Model of Health Behavior Change

• Lewin’s Change Theory

• Briefly identify equipment requirements.

• Analyze the system for meeting criteria for attestation for Meaningful

Use Stages 1, 2, and 3 (hint: it will have to be “certified”); briefly explain

certification and Meaningful Use. Describe how the system supports

patient safety and might improve patient outcomes.

• Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE)

• Discuss how the system supports clinical decision-making (CDS) and

enhances patient safety?

Please note that you must actually choose an EHR and identify it by name in

your paper, and that the requirements for providers are different than those for

hospitals and other facilities.
