  1. Introduce yourself to the class (in at least 3 sentences).

My name is Maryam Sabree-Unubun, and I am married with three beautiful daughters. I am going for Public Health and plan on going for my Masters in Health Administration or Nursing. I look forward to learning new things in this class.

2. Describe what self-efficacy means to you and why it is important in health behavior change (in at least 3 sentences). 

Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments (Bandura, 1977, 1986, 1997). Self-efficacy reflects confidence in the ability to exert control over one’s own motivation, behavior, and social environment.  In my opinion, self-efficacy means a person’s belief in their ability to succeed in accomplishing a given task. Self-efficacy is important in health behavior change, only when we have confidence in our potential, we adopt a healthy lifestyle. Also, self-efficacy is important in health behavior change because it determines how an individual will approach the health goals that he or she has set and how he/she will face the challenges that come along. For example, weight loss, they will need self-efficacy to believe in themselves and set realistic goals.

My name is Melissa. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where I work in healthcare. I am married with two awesome kids – 1 who is graduating from college this June and another who will be a freshman in high school in the Fall. With tremendous support from my husband and kids, I have been able to stay focused and take classes towards a BS in Healthcare Administration. I hope to continue working towards a Masters.

Self-efficacy is defined as “a person’s particular set of beliefs that determine how well one can execute a plan of action in prospective situations” (Lopez-Garrido, 2020). In other words, self-efficacy is one’s belief in their abilities to succeed in a specific situation. It can play an important role in changing an individual’s health behavior. Self-efficacy affects how they manage their health, nutrition and illness. For example, having a strong sense of self-efficacy can help people who are trying to quit smoking stick to their goals. 

I was not very confident in my ability to go back to school especially after many years of being away from it. After I had taken my first class and did well, I realized that I have the capability and ability to obtain my degree.
