Women who lived in the nineteenth century often struggled for agency over their own lives. In the short story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, the main character is a woman, Louise Mallard, who suffers from a weak heart which can reflect her overall unhappiness with her marriage and her life. In the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the female protagonist (who might be named Jane) is also unwell, suffering from depression and dominated by her husband. Comparing and contrasting these two stories can be useful in understanding more about women’s issues in the late nineteenth century as well as today. While both “The Story of an Hour” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” are similar in their use of female characters, they differ in their plot, symbols, and setting.
