The need for closure helped the NASA group identify problems when the threats did not indicate an apparent response to the attack, requiring substantial information to tackle the menace. In dealing with the attacks, the NASA fraternity responded by trying to gain data which would be instrumental in the detection and response capabilities of the attacks. The closure would be crucial in identifying the response plans for the ambiguous risks The correct response would be put in place with the proper management apart from the one that resulted in NASA’s failure to respond appropriately during Columbia’s final mission. The foam strike was an indefinite strike which caused damage, and the manager’s need for closure was to cater for solid forces instead of developing a wait-and-see attitude, which would be catastrophic. The videos of the foam strike would be keenly observed to identify the exact problem by engineers and safeguard the shuttles.

Tim Harford argues that companies that have a God complex should consider intelligent people with the ability to solve difficult problems. The reality is that companies should systematically establish trial and error processes instead of measuring the result of the tragedy. The God Complex states that no matter the weight of the problem, the experts are correct in their solution which the offer. Tim Harford points out that during the last fight, experts and engineers of high caliber should have been hired by NASA Company to analyze eventualities and highlight the occurrences critically. The results of the ambiguous risks should be foreseen, and the managers can put every step in place of dealing with the strike in case of its occurrence. This is through examining previous videos on the happening of such risks.
In conclusion, NASA Company would avoid the foam strike by examining the risks and strategizing on the best response. The management should be able to investigate the dangers of ambiguous risks and enable experts to address every obstacle towards striking back at the attack.
PAMELA’s DISCUSSION 1. Arie Kruglanski viewed the need for closure as a “desire for a definite answer on some topic, any answer as opposed to confusion and ambiguity” (p11-12). Holmes furthered observed, “When our need for closure is high, we tend to…jump to conclusions, and deny contradictions” (p13). How did the need for closure influence NASA’s decision about what to do with the foam strike?
The need for closure influenced NASA’s decision since “many managers remained stubbornly closed-minded on the subject of foam”. They had the investigation regarding the foam and still with the evidence that they had they didn’t accept that it could have been a factor in the disaster of the Columbia. It is also mentioned somewhere in the article something about how other flights have been successful and they just didn’t believe it. I feel in this incident there was a lot of throwing the blame around and no one really acknowledged who the fault was and who there was to blame for the lives that were lost and the accident itself.
I feel that the need for closure also applies to our daily personal life. In anything and everything that may be going on. Depending on the level of closure is how we will react towards it. I feel that most of the time I am in a high-level need of closure and will jump to conclusions which in some cases are not the best results. This is a question for my classmates, have you ever needed in the need for closure? How did you act towards it? What was done?
1. Discuss Tim Harford’s points made in “The God Complex” with respect to the Columbia tragedy as discussed in “Columbia ‘s Last Flight: The Inside Story of the Investigation and the Catastrophe it Laid Bare.”
In the article that we had this week regarding the Columbia tragedy, we can see that there was a lack of communication in every aspect of it. So as Harford said in his TED talk with the “God Complex” you will believe that you are infallibly right on your solution. I feel that in the article everyone that was involved in the investigation and the tragedy believed that they were right and that there was nothing else to look at. “Gehman, who had assumed that he could just go about his business but who now realized that he would have to accommodate these concerns if the final report was to have any credibility at all”. This part of the article really clicked with the TED talk and what Harford was talking about. If we could just be honest about what we have in front of us and be honest with ourselves and not be afraid of being wrong the world will be different and we will get rid of the “God Complex”.
This reminds me a lot about a supervisor that I used to have and reminds me of the toxic environment that I used to work for. He was always right and nothing that he did was wrong or could be questioned. It is funny because instead of removing him from his title I found out that he moved up and had an even hire position within the office. I have a question will we ever get rid of the “God Complex”.
WALTER’S DISCUSSION
1. It seemed as if they did not want to jump to conclusions and they did not want to make it a bigger deal than they thought it was. They said they had seen it before but never this big, so they were going to go ahead with the flight and things took a turn for the worse while in space. They needed closure on this type of problem because they wanted to be assured everything was fine so in the time they were checking the rocket, they skipped over it because they thought it was okay because they have delt with this before but never this big while in space.
1. Tim Harford was trying to be a problem solver in an innovative way in a sense. He was trying to see if there was to be a mistake, what would be the best way to solve this problem and how many ways he could solve this. His method was trying to make a good mistake by letting the rocket fly and then after finding ways he could fix this situation. Which ultimately is not a bad thing, but when dealing with situations such as flying into outer space, you have to be precise on everything because the window for errors are slim to none while in the atmosphere. He made a correlation about Taniyama Shiruma but found out later it was harder said than done
