Introduction

Leadership is comprehensive, and so are the several types of leadership in many organizations like the Army. A leader is someone who innovates, seeks to address new issues, and offers something fresh and novel to a community. Leadership can be divided into two categories: transactional leadership and transformative leadership. Transactional leaders describe the type of leaders that give the command, whereas transformational leaders support their subordinate’s personal and professional growth. Human is to error, and no leader is flawless. However, while some leaders can hardly lead themselves, others step up to the plate and provide excellent leadership. Leadership should be flexible in any given organization, especially in the Army. This paper aims to study the several types of leadership in an Army setting.

Literature Review

Toxic leadership involves an incompetent leader who views just the opportunity for self-improvement, taking advantage of others to increase their gain without considering the potential emotional harm they might cause. In the Army, toxic leadership involves a blend of selfish attitudes, intentions, and actions that are harmful to other people, as defined by the US Army (2012). Asbery (2015) concludes that toxic leadership does more than harm than good to the extremes of suicidal tendencies.

Transformational leadership -a study on the nature of transformational leadership in the Military explores the relationship between women’s leadership in the Military and the challenges they face. Representing women in the Military, especially in a male-dominated world, is needed. The study offers an understanding of the gender roles in leadership in the Military world. A victorious Army needs a transformational leader who is more interested in his employees' success.

Servant leadership Servant leadership aims to realize a vision by enormously empowering the workforce. As a result, staff members can develop and learn while contributing their knowledge and perspective . Uddin, (2019) reports that servant leadership in the Army will protect and care for the subordinates, improving an organization's overall performance.

Emotional Intelligence and leadership development -emotions that influence us to respond are a state of being relating to our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage personal feelings and those of the people around you. Emotionally intelligent leaders have a higher success rate than leaders who do not. Walters S. (2018) argues in a study about emotional intelligence and leadership development that mastering emotions as a leader are essential for organizational growth, especially in the US Army.

Army leader Qualities – Army commanders’ characteristics are agility, flexibility, versatility, mental and physical resilience, competency, and most importantly, character, as the 39th Chief of staff of the Army states. Character is influenced by the decisions made by an individual and interpersonal interactions following Army ethics and values. Straus, S. G., McCausland, T. C., Grimm, G., & Giglio, K. (2018) report that in the US Army, leaders must be able to use critical thinking and flourish in uncertain situations. Good leaders need all these qualities to lead as an example to their subordinates.

Findings

After extensive research on the styles of leadership in the Army, several findings emerged that include:

· Toxic leadership is essential just as good leadership; it negatively affects the Military, creating systematic problems. Especially for first-time soldiers, it is easy to fall prey to extremes of suicide.

· Women leaders in the Military face challenges as it is a male-dominated world. It offers an understanding of gender-specific roles in the Military and recommendations to transform leadership.

· Their leadership philosophies directly impact the degree of perfectionism exhibited by leaders. Despite the US Army promoting tendencies toward high expectations and perfectionism of the leaders, little is known about the relationship between perfectionism and leadership styles in the Military.

· Charismatic leadership is well supported, and education, selflessness, and organizational skills are some of the factors that contribute to great military families.

· The US Army has improved over time, and more training could facilitate improved leadership opportunities. Teamwork is required for leadership development.

· The Army will ensure that the subordinates are well-cared for and safeguarded if servant leadership is implemented. Transformational leadership is advised in enhancing organizational performance to promote the organization's mission and objectives.

· Developing leaders is based on various psychometric tests, such as emotional intelligence, which support essential domains of adaptive growth.

· An organization like the US Army will advance and succeed with the support of constructive criticism and specific feedback on leadership styles and attributes.

Recommendations

· Good leadership is critical for the US Army’s achievement of the set goals and visions. To inspire and reward soldiers while obeying the law, the Military needs a combination of transactional and transformational leaders and servant leaders who exemplify the Military's core value of putting others before themselves. More energy needs to be put into developing such leaders.

· There is still a lot to be done. More research needs to be done to deal with issues such as toxic leadership, which negatively affects the performance of the Army. Researchers need to develop strategies that improve leadership development in which leaders positively impact their subordinates. Competent military leaders exhibit each style of leadership. Their Commander-in-Chief, the President of the United States of America, has delivered directives they must obey.

In summary, it is a collective responsibility to understand the scope of military leadership. Leaders must lead by example, employing a blend of servant, transformational and transactional leadership styles to achieve the set goal of the Army. With the available research on leadership development in this paper, it is possible to improve the existing leadership methods through training.
