Using the theory of unpleasant symptoms as a guide, what would you look for in an assessment tool for patient symptoms?

Unpleasant symptoms theory depicts vital aspects of a patient's symptoms to boost health officers' understanding of their condition and inform their research and practice (Han, 2018). Symptoms are essential to nursing and care delivery because the activities nurses engage emphasize symptoms, including assessing, measuring, and creating prevention strategies. The theory examines a patient’s symptoms subjectively as the patient depicts though it varies with time and intensity. In the assessment tool depicting the patient's symptoms, I would consider the symptoms the patient is depicting. The symptoms vary in timing and intensity, like the onset time and the duration it takes for the symptoms to offset the body. In determining the extent of the depicted symptoms, I would check the patient's distress level, feelings, and how they change after some time (Choi et al., 2019). In the assessment tool, I would determine if there were any symptom cluster where two or more symptoms occur at ago. Some symptoms occurring together may have similar causes and consequences on the patient's well-being.

Furthermore, in the assessment tool highlighting the patient's symptoms, I would consider the factors causing them and their categorization. The factors that may cause symptom emergence in patients include psychological, physiological, and situational (Han, 2018). Factors categorization is crucial because it will enable me to think beyond the physical realm for effective and efficient patient care. Physiological factors which influence a person's health are gender and age, which significantly relates to health conditions and treatment. Psychological factors which cause the development of a patient's symptoms are cognition and mood. For example, a patient may be moody, gloomy, and anxious during the assessment. Regarding cognition, some patients may depict proper understanding of their health conditions and symptoms, thus their ability to express them, hence effective healthcare. Psychological factors exert a substantial effect on a patient's symptoms (Choi et al., 2019). On the other hand, situational factors are external influencers that affect people's well-being by enabling symptom occurrence. They include the physical and social environment.

Additionally, in the assessment tool depicting a patient's symptoms, I would consider symptoms' complexities and their effects on the patient. I would use the assessment tool to identify the symptom's impact on the patient's social and physical environment. I would measure the effects in terms of performance experience in the dimensions of social, physical, and cognitive performance. Since various interrelated factors lead to symptom occurrence and how patients experience them, they significantly determine a person's performance and consider feedback to affect symptom occurrence and experience (Özel et al., 2018). The person’s performance level from the assessment tool will help me develop potential preventive and management strategies to enable the patient to overcome the symptoms. Their components and inter-relatedness will be crucial for intervention developments.
