For this assignment, students will write a 3-5 page paper comparing and contrasting a popular press article and an empirical research article. This paper will consist of two parts. The first part of the paper will summarize both articles and should be less than half the length of the total paper. Students will also synthesize and write how both articles compare and contrast for the second part of the paper. This synthesis should carefully and thoroughly answer the following questions:
- How similar are both accounts?
- Did the media report clearly and accurately describe the research? Were there any distortions in generalizing the results? Do you believe the popular press article accurately portrayed the topic? If not what did they misunderstand or fail to mention?
- Was the media report summarized objectively without bias?
