Think about how great works are produced. As an example, imagine the studio of the great Italian Renaissance artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti, as he begins work on a sculpture. In the center of the studio is a huge block of pristine Carrara marble. Michelangelo positions his chisel and hits it with his hammer. Chips of stone break off and fall to the ground. Each day, for many days and months, chunks of expensive marble fall to the floor as his masterpiece slowly emerges.

For this week’s discussion, I read the problem statement in the Lyle dissertation. According to the Capstone Rubric and checklist, there are three ways that are evaluated. The first section is a contribution to research on the problem. The way the checklist is set up is that the dissertation can score outstanding, above average, or meets expectations. In the contribution to research, the problem statement can be rated above average. The reason for this, the problem statement should be in the first sentence of the section. The problem of the study is not even stated until the end of the section. The problem statement of a dissertation in the area of concern or gap in the investigation. This is addressed by the study and is stated as such (Butin, 2010). The next area for evaluation is the contribution to the field of study. For the Lyle problem statement, this would score outstanding. The author of the study was able to explain in detail the problem for the research to be conducted. The third phase of the rubric is writing quality and professional standards. Again, this is a score of outstanding. The author, Lyle (2010) gave information on the rigor of content that is to be researched and compared to the course standards that show adequate yearly progress (Lyle, 2010, p.14).
This problem statement does meet the requirements of the Capstone Rubric and checklist. The author aligns the problem with the research and gap that is explaining the problem. The problem statement not only addresses the problem, but why there is a problem.

According to the dissertation checklist for qualitative studies, the research problem should be stated. In the dissertation by Lyle (2010), it is clearly stated that the problem is aligning curricula with state standards used to monitor adequate yearly progress. it is also noted that Jacob's model of curriculum mapping is not a fix that will happen quickly. Additionally, Lyle (2010) notes that Jacob's model of curriculum mapping is expensive and complex. Next, the checklist instructions are to provide evidence of consistency, showing that the problem is current, relevant, and pertains to the discipline. Lyle (2010) gathered information that was current at the time of the study. Lyle (2010) is a student studying a Doctor of Education, Teacher Leadership; therefore, the study is relevant and does pertain to the discipline.
The dissertation checklist also asks that the study builds upon previous research, primarily focusing on the past 5 years. Lyle (2010) has research that was completed within 5 years but also has some research that was conducted prior to the 5-year focus. Lyle (2010) focuses on a gap in practice with contributing to the body of knowledge needed to address the problem by exploring teachers' and administrators' perceptions of the impact the Jacobs model of curriculum mapping had on leadership roles and responsibilities.
The rubric asks for the problem to be clearly articulated, worthy of doctor-level research, and within the scope of the discipline. The dissertation problem statement in the Lyle (2010) dissertation does meet the rubric guidelines.
