Instructions. Find and observe a group that must make a decision: a leadership meeting for a student organization, a televised city council meeting, a public committee meeting discussing some issue facing the community, a business group discussing a problem or strategy, a charitable board or foundation in its monthly meeting, or a college committee are all possibilities. If you cannot find a live meeting to go to, you can try find a recorded one online.
Take notes on the group, and then answer the following questions:
Identify and describe the group briefly, being sure to note its purpose, size, composition, structure, and seating patterns. (If you choose a video, you must choose a video where all of this can be observed.)
What issue or issues did the group members examine during the meeting? Did the group preface its discussion with an analysis of the procedures it would use to reach its decision?
Did the group use any methods to structure its discussion, such as an agenda, rules of order, a chairperson or leader, voting procedures, or the like?
What procedures did the group use to reach its decision? Did it vote? Discuss matters to consensus?
To what degree did you observe group polarization as the group discussed a problem? In other words, did the group rally behind a potentially risky solution once several of the group members expressed their views publicly? Be sure to define group polarization clearly.
To what degree were the symptoms of groupthink present in the group (overestimation of the group’s importance, closed-mindedness, pressures to uniformity)? Be sure to define groupthink clearly.
To what degree were any of the causes of groupthink identified by Janis present in the group (e.g., cohesiveness, time pressure, a directive leader, etc.)? Could these factors have interfered with the group’s decision making capabilities?
