Week 1: Exploring factors and Factoring Trinomials
5656 unread replies.123123 replies.
We start the week by looking at the concept of Greatest Common Factor (GCF). We will then move on to factoring trinomials. For your first note [due by Wednesday], type a detailed note with worked out example[s] and full explanations regarding GCF. In the next part of your post [same post] explain how to factor a trinomial you have chosen, clearly explaining the steps and the math involved. You can find examples to solve in your textbook or on the Internet. Alternatively, instead of typing a detailed main note, you may meet the requirement bycreating a video or VoiceThread (make sure you have a supporting PowerPoint) that begins with an explanation of the concept of GCF illustrated clearly by an example.
For your next two posts review and comment on at least two other posts, videos or VoiceThreads. You may use any technology you prefer (text only, text with images, video, VoiceThread response, narrated PowerPoint slide, etc.) to compose these review comments.

Week 2: Special Factoring Strategies
8989 unread replies.127127 replies.
This week we continue our study of factoring. As you become more familiar with factoring, you will notice there are some factoring problems that follow specific patterns. These patterns are known as
a difference of squares;
a perfect square trinomial;
a difference of cubes; and
a sum of cubes.
Choose two of the forms above. Type a detailed note with worked out examples, Alternatively, create a video or VoiceThread with supporting PowerPoints, explaining the pattern that allows you to recognize the binomial or trinomial as having special factors. Illustrate with examples of a binomial or trinomial expression that may be factored using the special techniques you are explaining. Make sure that you do not use the same example a classmate has already used!
For your next two posts review and comment on at least two other posts, videos or VoiceThreads. You may use any technology you prefer (text only, text with images, video, VoiceThread response, narrated PowerPoint, etc.) to compose these review comments.

Week 3: Graphs
9191 unread replies.117117 replies.
This week, we begin graphing systems of simultaneous equation. Before we begin looking at the many graphs you can find out on the Web, a good starting point is to review our knowledge of 2-D graphs. These graphs are known as 2-D because they have two axes. One you are familiar with is the xy-graph, which has an x axis and a y-axis. Type a detailed note with worked out examples with full explanation. Alternatively, you may createa video or VoiceThread that addresses at least two characteristics of graphs in the x,y plane. Some of the characteristics that you can choose are:
How to determine coordinates of different points in the graph
How to determine the x intercept and the y intercept of a line on this graph
How to find the slope of a line on the graph
Given a linear equation, how to graph a line
How to determine if a line has a positive or a negative slope
You can also choose any other characteristic that you like. Make sure that you illustrate what you are describing with an appropriate example. For your next two posts review and comment on at least two other notes, videos or VoiceThreads!

Week 4: Solving Systems of Equations
8181 unread replies.113113 replies.
There are three ways of solving systems of linear equations: graphing, substitution, and elimination. This week we are studying substitution and elimination. Type a detailed note with worked out examples and full explanations. Alternatively, create a video or VoiceThread that explains in detail how to solve a problem using either of these two methods. You can find a problem to solve in your text book or on the internet. Show your step-by-step solution using one of the two methods. Make sure to include how you will check your solution. For your next two posts review and comment on at least two other notes, videos or VoiceThreads!

Week 5: Square Roots
106106 unread replies.129129 replies.
This week, as we begin our study of square roots. A good starting point is to explore the life of Pythagoras and his contribution to the world of mathematics. Type a detailed note with worked out examples and explanations. Alternatively, you may create a video or VoiceThread to provide us with a snapshot of one part of his life or his discoveries. Include in the post the famous theorem that we still use today, supported with a detailed example. For your next two posts review and comment on at least two other notes, videos or VoiceThreads!

Week 6: Solving Equations using Square Roots or the Quadratic Formula
8888 unread replies.126126 replies.
This week we will learn to solve quadratic equations by using the square root property and the quadratic formula. Type a detailed note with worked out examples and explanations. Alternatively, you may create a video or VoiceThread clearly explaining one of these methods. Your post should also include a step by step solution to a problem you have solved to illustrate the method you are describing. For your next two posts review and comment on at least two other notes, videos or VoiceThreads!

Week 7: Understanding Functions
9595 unread replies.117117 replies.
As we begin the study of Functions we see that they have a language of their own. Let’s look at this new language and the terms it uses. We see terms such as: relation, function, functional notation, x-intercept, y-intercept, axis of symmetry, maximum (of a function), minimum (of a function), and vertex. Type a detailed note with worked out examples and explanations. Alternatively, you may create a video or VoiceThread that clearly explains any two of these terms and explain the term to your classmates in your own words. Then explain with a supporting example how you will graph a quadratic function. For your next two posts review and comment on at least two notes, videos or VoiceThreads!
