Week 1 Forum

Race & Ethnic Relations

Use the following site:

https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/table/PST045216/00

to explore your home town or current community, paying particular attention to the racial and ethnic makeup.

Next, Read: Hayanga, A. J., Zeliadt, S. B., & Backhus, L. M. (2013). Residential segregation and lung cancer mortality in the United States. JAMA Surgery, 148(1), 37-42. doi:10.1001/jamasurgery.2013.408, available in the APUS library here: http://ezproxy.apus.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=mdc&AN=23324839&site=ehost-live&scope=site

Then, answer the following:

To what extent is your home town or current community segregated by race or ethnicity? Is this reflected in the public schools and the location of stores, or other factors? What impact do you believe segregation has on race/ethnic relations in your community? Finally, what are some major concerns found in the article above, and could they relate to your area as well? Why or why not?

Explain your answer.

Instructions for all Forums:

Each week, learners will post one initial post per week. This post must demonstrate comprehension of the course materials, the ability to apply that knowledge in the real world. Learners will engage with the instructor and peers throughout the learning week. To motivate engaged discussion, posts are expected to be on time with regular interaction throughout the week. All posts should demonstrate college level writing skills. To promote vibrant discussion as we would in a face to face classroom, formatted citations and references are not required. Quotes should not be used at all, or used sparingly. If you quote a source quotation marks should be used and an APA formatted citation and reference provided.

Week 2 Forum

Ideologies & Privilege

Explore the development of identity as discussed in one or more of our course materials this week. Discuss how aspects of identity may work to keep some groups in power, giving an example from:

1. The news, an observation, or other real life experience

and

2. A peer-reviewed journal article.

Finally, explain how the information you explored this week contributed to your own personal understanding of oppression.

Then, answer the following:

1. What were the intentions of these policies regarding Native Americans in boarding schools, and what have been the outcomes of these policies?

2. Thinking of the educational system today, what are current stumbling blocks to inter-cultural interaction in the educational system, as found in the Glock, et. al article? Consider: should there be more emphasis on assimilation to majority American culture in schools? And to what degree should schools emphasize cultural diversity? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches?

Week 4 Forum

Media & Segregation

Explore TWO of the following magazines:

Allure, Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Ebony, Elle, Esquire, Essence, Glamour, GQ, InStyle, Latina, Marie Claire, Men’s Health, StyleWatch, Teen Vogue, Vanidades, Vogue, or another similar fashion/beauty-related magazine (note – you may use actual hard copies of the magazines and can find them in grocery stores, libraries, and bookstores; or, you may google these magazines and explore their websites).

Then, respond to the following:

1. Briefly state which two magazines you explored, and the main target audiences of each.

2. In examining images, advertisements, and articles in each magazine, discuss what – if any – racial or ethnic stereotypes were present. Were there examples of cultural racism in the magazines? What would you estimate to be the racial and ethnic makeup shown – that is, what percentage of people appear to be White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern, and so on? Finally, do you feel that magazines should be more integrated, or is there a use in magazines remaining segregated – that is, having separate magazines for different ethnic and racial groups?

Week 5 Forum

Economic Inequality

The social standing of the various racial/ethnic groups within the U.S. varies greatly, from the stereotypes of some as “lazy” and others as “overachievers.”

To explore these issues, first, read: Ridgeway, C. L., & Kricheli-Katz, T. Intersecting cultural beliefs in social relations: gender, race, and class binds and freedoms. (2013). Gender & Society, Volume: 27 issue: 3, page(s): 294-318. https://doi.org/10.1177/0891243213479445, available in the APUS library here: http://ezproxy.apus.edu/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/23486630?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents

Next, select a U.S. state and, in the areas of education, income, occupation/employment, and housing, use the internet to find the latest information on the following questions:

1) Which minority group has come the closest to equality with the dominant group in your selected state?

2) Which minority group has the farthest to go?

3) How do intersections of identities as described in the Ridgeway & Kricheli-Katz article help to explain some of the patterns in the state you selected?

Health Inequality & The Law

Look up news articles about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act enacted in 2010 (both for and against the legislation). Then answer the following questions:

1) What are major inequalities related to health in the U.S. as they affect less powerful groups in society? Relate one of our weekly course materials to your answer.

2) What is the role of the state (i.e. federal government) in creating and perpetuating these inequalities?

3) After reading about it, do you think the PPACA legislation is helpful in terms of health inequalities? Explain your answer.

Many Americans have opinions about immigration. For this forum discussion you will be assigned a viewpoint to discuss.

For students with last names starting with A through M, do the following:

2. Locate one current internet article related to immigration in the U.S., using a news or popular site. SOCI306 Race and Ethnicity

Week 8 Forum

Social Development & Undoing Racism

1) Use the online library to find one peer-reviewed journal article that examines a practical approach to reduce prejudice and discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or nationality.

2) Describe the research: what was the research question, what approach was used to attempt to reduce prejudice/discrimination? What were the groups involved? What was the outcome – that is, did the approach work?

3) Imagine you are a sociologist and you wish to apply the approach from the article to reduce prejudice and discrimination, but in a different context. How would you apply the approach to a different group, or in a different location, or circumstance than is given in the article? What changes would you make from the authors’ approach, and why?
