Begin this assignment by reading the following scenario:
Atlantic Shrimp is a major processor of fresh and frozen shrimp sold throughout the United States. Atlantic shrimp employs 301 workers at its principal processing plant. The plant has a relatively young crew with 73% of the workforce between the ages of 23 and 31. The plant is in Savannah, Georgia. Atlantic Shrimp requires a high school diploma or GED as a condition of employment for its cleaning crew. Right now, the entire cleaning crew at Atlantic Shrimp is Caucasian.
Prepare a 4- to 6-page paper, not counting the cover page, the requested appendix, and reference page. Address the following questions in your paper:
1 How would information about Savannah’s labor market be important in considering whether or not Atlantic Shrimp is in compliance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Discuss relevant data you find associated with Savannah’s demographics.
2 Based on your readings and research, does Atlantic Shrimp need to make policy changes to ensure compliance with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Should there be changes to comply with the Age Discrimination in Employment Act? If so, what changes should Atlantic Shrimp make, and why are they necessary to comply with each of these important laws?
3 Use at least six (6) sources, at least four (4) of which should be found on your own (outside of the module readings). Provide a 1- or 2-page Appendix discussing why your non-module sources (ones found on your own) were chosen and what criteria you used to determine that they were appropriate sources to utilize for your academic paper.
Assignment Expectations
Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in the Case rubric. The following is a review of the rubric criteria:
• Assignment-Driven: Does the paper fully address all aspects of the assignment? Is the assignment addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements?
• Critical Thinking: Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level analysis, in which information derived from multiple sources, expert opinions, and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in the formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic with sufficient depth of discussion and analysis?
• Business Writing: Is the essay logical, well organized, and well written? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are section headings included? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding, or is justification/support instead conveyed through excessive use of direct quotations?
• Effective Use of Information: Does the submission demonstrate that the student has read, understood, and can apply the background materials for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do additional sources used provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do they help in shaping the overall paper?
• Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding of APA Style of referencing by inclusion of proper citations (for paraphrased text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g., references used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research) been included, and are these properly cited? Have all sources cited in the paper been included on the References page?
Timeliness: Has the assignment been submitted to TLC (Trident’s learning management system) on or before the module’s due date?

Case Assignment
You are an HR Manager for a large sheet metal manufacturing company. One of your largest customers has just secured a major office furniture contract with the federal government. Your customer wants your company to become a subcontractor for the project, making all of the plastic parts required. There is uncertainty among your organization’s top officials about whether or not to become part of this project, even thought it would be very lucrative. The top officials’ concerns center around the need to prepare an affirmative action plan and to formulate the goal achievement requirements that would be imposed to correct underutilization.
Your paper of 4 to 5 pages (not including title page nor reference page) should address the following questions:
1 What are the EEO compliance requirements that impact a federal subcontractor?
2 What are the important components of an affirmative action plan (expand on the goal-setting process)?
3 How should affirmative action goals relate to an organization’s strategic human resources plan?
4 What would you recommend to your organization’s top officials about becoming part of this project?

Recruitment of Females and Veterans of the U.S. Military
Before you begin this assignment, be sure to review the Module 2 Background readings.
You are a newly hired HR staffing specialist for MEGATRANSPORT, a private-sector employer in the business of manufacturing large transport equipment, primarily for the U.S. government. Because of shortages in the hiring of several protected categories that could appear discriminatory, your supervisor has instructed that you immediately prepare a 2- to 3-page noticeable and attention-grabbing news release that includes discussion of best practices for the recruitment of females as well as male and female military veterans.
Make sure that your news release focuses on the fact that you are targeting applicants specifically for the large transport equipment industry and likewise identify (by name) real-life, private-sector employers who have used some of the recruitment techniques that you propose.
Use at least 2 Trident Online Library sources plus any applicable background readings to help strengthen your discussion.

EMPLOYEE RIGHTS/SAFETY
Before starting this assignment be sure you are familiar with the following laws and their amendments:
U.S. Department of Labor. Wage and Hour Division (WHD) (n.d.) The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) Retrieved at https://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/1421.htm

HR Hero. (2017) Occupational Health and Safety Administration. Retrieved at http://topics.hrhero.com/occupational-safety-and-health-administration-osha/
As you read the following case scenario, consider how the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, safety laws, or other state laws might apply to this situation.
One of your old college roommates, Sandra, is a nurse who took a job that required her to be able to lift 50 pounds smoothly. She was told the job had this physical strength requirement for patient safety and to ensure that teams of nurses could move patients as needed. Sandra worked for a nursing home chain that employed 900 employees.
Sandra had become pregnant and on her doctor’s advice tried to refrain from lifting 50 pounds. After she kept finding herself in situations at work that required her to do this kind of lifting, she decided to just stay home until the baby was born.
After the baby was born, Sandra went back to work, but her baby developed a medical condition that required her to see doctors frequently. Sandra didn’t have anyone else who could be a “dedicated” caregiver for her baby, so she took leave from work to tend to her child.
When Sandra’s leave was about to expire, she got her daughter’s doctor to write a note in support of extending her leave. The note was not clear and suggested that the doctor thought it would be nice, but not necessary, for mother and child to be together.
Sandra’s manager told her that if Sandra did not want to return to work now, the nursing home would not be able to keep her job open for her any longer. However, he told her she should apply to the company again as a new-hire when she was ready to get back to work.
Prepare a 2- to 3-page paper (not counting the cover and reference pages) that addresses the following:
1. Which laws may apply to protect Sandra’s job? Discuss why.
2. Identify specific impediments that might make it difficult for Sandra to avail herself of these potential protections.
3. Discuss whether or not Sandra’s employer may have opened itself up to legal liabilities and explain your reasoning.
Use at least 2 Trident Online Library sources plus any applicable background readings to support your discussion. Submit your paper by the module due date.

Disputes in a unionized workplace

Read the following scenario:
Jim and Ted are both hourly employees working as forklift drivers in a large grocery chain’s central California warehouse. Their workplace is unionized. They work in the same warehouse section under Bob, the second shift supervisor.
Jim has always found the job difficult, because the job was fast-paced, but repetitive; and even though the forklifts and machines do the heavy lifting and moving, there were situations in which a driver had to deal with slightly misplaced pallets or otherwise use ingenuity and “muscle” to keep things moving smoothly through the shift. Jim was small in stature and obviously not as physically strong as his co-workers. Ted made a point of never helping Jim with these adjustments, even though he helped other drivers when such situations arose. Jim was gay, and he thought Ted resented having him there – Ted never seemed to want to talk with Jim on breaks, for example.
Jim thought Ted was being a bad colleague, especially on those days when Jim could have really used Ted’s help. Jim mentioned to Bob, the supervisor, that wished Ted would be willing to help him once in a while. After all, he would be willing to help Ted if he asked. Bob replied that he did not think that was going to happen.
It was not only Ted who would never help Jim. All of the other forklift drivers seemed to look the other way when Jim found himself in a situation where there was “muscle” needed to keep things going.
Recently, the company implemented a new stacking protocol. Soon thereafter, Jim was not meeting his production numbers on some days. He thought it was because he could not get any help from his colleagues when needed and his supervisor, Bob, did not seem to care.
Bob, his supervisor, did carefully record Jim’s production numbers to highlight the shifts when he had underperformed. After a while, Jim started skipping breaks and shortening his lunch break on some days so he could spend a little more time on the forklift and try to meet his production for the shift. No one seemed to care or notice.
As Jim came to realize that he was going to get a bad performance evaluation if the situation continued, he asked Bob if he could order his co-workers to help him when situations arose where he needed help. Bob said he could not give Jim any special treatment.
Jim grew more frustrated, especially by the lack of communication and what he considered to be the stubbornness of his co-workers in refusing to help him when he needed it. He reasoned that he had a family to feed, just as they did, and he had to do something about the unfair treatment he was receiving.
Jim told Bob that he was going to tell the union that he wanted to file a grievance, because he thought the way he was being treated was not right.
Bob told Jim that he’d never known a grievance to work out for the person who filed it, but Jim should do what he thought he needed to do.
Jim felt very upset about what he perceived as Bob’s indifference. He filed a formal grievance with the union about the situation.
Prepare a 2- to 3-page (not counting title and reference pages) paper that addresses the following questions:
What do you think will happen next? Why? Discuss the important steps that might take place to resolve this issue. If you were the HR manager in this warehouse, what would you do to get to the root of the issue? Why?
Use at least 2 Trident Online Library sources plus any applicable background readings to help strengthen your discussion.

• Effective Use of Information: Does the submission demonstrate that the student has read, understood and can apply the background materials for the module?

For this Module 1 Discussion, you will first be asked to react to a video report and then do some research and comment on some international aspects of protected categories in employment.
In March 2017, the European Court of Justice ruled that employers may ban Islamic headscarves. As long as all religious symbols are also treated the same way, the court said no discrimination can be claimed.
Watch the video report from Deutsche Welle (DW) Brent Goff Reports for background and then address the discussion questions.
Brent Goff Reports. (2017, March 14). In Europe, no religion at work [Video file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LemKVWkoeXE
1. How do you think the European case discussed in the video report would be decided in the United States? Why? Explain and support your answer.
2. Select a category (age, race, religion, marital status, criminal/incarceration history, pregnancy, sex, sexual identity, education level, parenthood, national origin, dress, economic status, military status, and so forth).
3. In the United States, how are individuals in the category that you selected protected from discrimination in employment? Be specific. Give examples.
4. For the category you have selected, how are U.S. protections different from or similar to protections in another country (You choose the country to make the comparison).

Module 2 Discussion
First Post—Module 2
A voluntary self-identification form required by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) for federal contractors asks job applicants with disabilities to self-identify as disabled. This form is designed to help federal contractors and subcontractors meet Section 503 regulations, which set a target of seven percent of the workforce comprised of employees with disabilities. Nationally, there is a high rate of unemployment among people with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits businesses from asking specific questions about whether an applicant has a disability,

Now, for your first post, defend or challenge one of the following positions (“a” or “b”):
a. The use of the voluntary form results in benefits for everyone. The use of the form leads to expanded opportunities for people with disabilities, Moreover, through use of the form, employers have a better understanding of the composition and needs of their workforce, leading to higher employee productivity, which, in turn, benefits society.
or
b. Applicants with disabilities should proceed with caution before self-identifying as disabled on this voluntary form. The employer may be able to satisfy some federal contracting requirements through these forms, but not every HR department is ethical and can be trusted to keep this information confidential in the hiring process. An applicant should wait until he or she is hired before deciding whether to disclose any disability; especially if the applicant has a non-apparent disability.
For either “a” or “b” above, bring in additional information from at least two reputable sources (library and/or Web-based). Also bring in your own personal experiences, as applicable.
