This week we will step back from reading and discussing ethical theories and focus on the application of our knowledge to actual cases derived from real-world settings. We will begin by examining, through a brief lecture, how the case study system developed and how we can use it to become aware of situations that require moral reflection, judgment, and decision. We will then encounter two different case studies.

The second case study: “The Reluctant Security Guard,” offers individual students the chance to identify with a whistle-blowing security guard who challenged his employers and was fired. Put yourself in his shoes and decide along the way if he made ethical choices and if not, reflect on what you would have done in this setting. Applying theory to practice is what you will do in a more comprehensive way for your final project. Next week we’ll begin to build those projects in a step by step fashion so you can be prepared to present your work to the class during our final module.
