PEERS RESPONSE:

The two art pieces that I chose to reflect on this week from the same time period and movement, but from different regions, are Snap the Whip by Winslow Homer, and the third class carriage by Honore Daumier. Both these paintings are from the realism movement.

Snap the Whip, by Winslow Homer(1836-1910) was an oil on canvas painting that was created in(1872), during the realism movement in America. this painting is 56.cm x 91.4 cm ( 22 in by 36.0 in ). The artist wanted to try and capture a more realistic look that had meaning to what he was going to create. At first glance, to me this painting represented joy. I came to that conclusion, because you can see several boys looking as though they are having a fun day outside together. This painting was created to show the simple happy life of country folks, and the red schoolhouse is showing us how simple life was in the country when there was one room that taught the children unlike the city schools. There is so much brightness in this painting symbolizing happiness and joy. You can see adults in the background waiving as to support the children playing and having fun.

The second painting, The third class carriage by Honore Daumier( French Marseilles(1808-1879 Valmondois) (1862-1864), this painting is an oil on campus 25 3/4 x 35 1/2 in . ( 65.4x 90.2 cm) and represents the realism movement in France. This painting was created to show the hard life of third class people in mid- nineteenth- Paris. This painting was crated to show the hard lives of these travelers, you can see how compact the carriage is, and the artist shows a mother nursing, and an elderly woman that is still working, and the little boy shows us how young children had to start working at a young age. The painting is very dark except the small amount of light focused on the nursing mother, and elderly lady, it seems as though he wanted to make sure to show that hard work is also for the nursing mothers and the elderly, and simply that life is hard.

Both these paintings are similar in the fact that both artists wanted to show real life in their paintings, and they are also so different, because although they are able to show how life was in that time, each painting depicts a different story, as far as mood. The Snap the Whip was able to capture joy and happiness, and the third-class carriage was opposite, because the artist was trying to show more of a grim look at life. but altogether both portraits were able to tell a story of life during that era.

In my opinion Snap the whip was able to capture more of a happiness, because of the difference in location, The children are happy, and life seems to be good, but it was taken closer to the 19th century, whereas the other painting was created in the mid-1800s in France, when life was a little harder than in America.
