Five Ways to Succeed in School

  Spend enough time studying

Schedule your study time to ensure that you study 2 hours outside of class for every one hour you spend in class each week (12 credits = 12 hours in class/week = 24 hours studying outside of class/week).  Make a weekly class/study schedule and follow it!

Review what you are learning

Spend at least 5 minutes every day reviewing your class notes and readings for every class. , do weekly reviews of each subject. Take time to read through and review weekly discussions, not just the posts that you contribute. 

Stay on Track

Keep up with your studying and class assignments.  Do all of your homework and turn in all assignments. Try to stay 1-2 chapters ahead in your textbooks and definitely do your best to not fall behind, it is stressful and can make it very difficult to catch up. Most importantly – log in and participate in the class. 

Plan your study time

Take a few minutes to plan your study time, review what you want to accomplish and get to it.  Study 30-45 minutes than take a short 5 minute break.  A short break does wonders for the concentration.  Don’t check your email or phone messages – it will be harder to get back to studying and stop your momentum.

Don’t multitask while studying

When you study, do just that – study!  Studying while doing two things at once such as sending instant messages pr watching TV (multitasking) makes your studying less effective.  This type of studying makes the information you are learning harder to remember later on, especially during quizzes.

Some study strategies I would recommend to other students is planning out what assignment you are going to do or what you are going to study and then planning when you are going to do it. I believe planning is one of the best strategies because if planned well, it can give you time to enjoy other things in life, keeps you organized, and can help relieve stress from school or other things as well such as work. I also believe that asking questions is a big part in school because the professor will always be able to help with whatever you need.

My one of study strategies taking asynchronous class is to try to finish before the deadline. We all do have other sudden plans coming up from either work or social life so for me to prepare it is do my assignment as soon as possible with plenty of time to finish or submit assignments before the deadline so I don’t have to keep worrying about it.

I think a strategy I like to use is to do and finish work before the due date so that I am up to date, can spend more time doing work or classes that I am having a harder time on, and reduce the amount of stress and anxiety from the amount of work I have to do for each week. It also helps with being able to spend more time doing your own stuff if you are ahead or up to date on school work. Another strategy is to also balance between school work and personal stuff so that you are less stressed.

I work 50 hours a week and take three classes. It is challenging to stay on track every week, but I always make sure to turn in my assignments before the due date. On my days off, I spend more than 10 hours working on my assignments and get ahead if it is possible. Getting ahead reduces my workload for the upcoming week, so I always try not to procrastinate when I have the opportunity to do my schoolwork on my breaks at work and home.
