CIS 101 – Evaluating Sources Curation Project
Overview
An annotated bibliography will be created and submitted to a Moodle forum for review by
classmates. Demonstrate ability to research and analyze using modern computer resources (course SLO #3). Value: 100 points
Curation Requirements
I. Part I – Evaluation Criteria
A. Find Sources: Look for three college-level websites that discuss how to evaluate research resources. Create a proper citation for each one. Note: you will only create a citation for these sites. You will NOT be summarizing and evaluating
them.
B. Develop List: Based on the information found on the previous websites, develop your own list of evaluation criteria. The “author” needs to be one of the criteria. There should be no less than five items and no more than eight. Briefly discuss why each criterion is useful and why you selected it. This section should be at least two
paragraphs and clearly highlight the criteria being discussed.
II. Part II – Technology Topic
A. Pick a technology-related topic. This can be related to something we have learned in class or another tech topic of your choice.
B. Find Articles: Search for three articles on that topic. At least one should be from a library database and all should be reputable. All should be current within the last two
years.
Important: You will be using the criteria list you developed in Step I-B above to evaluate each article so make sure you select ones where you can find a majority of
the information needed to complete this part of the assignment. Review the
resources in Week 4 (Article Summary Project) as a refresher if needed.

IV. Part III – Annotated Bibliography
A. Definition. An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive
and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform
the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.

University Library, 27 Oct. 2020, 12:07PM, http://guides.library.cornell.edu/annotatedbibliography
B. Create an Annotation. Based on the criteria you developed in Step I, create an annotation for each article that includes the following:
1. Citation: Cite your source. You may use easybib.com or citationmachine.net but you might need to find additional information to make a complete citation.
2. Summary: an overview of the main points of the article; 3. Evaluation: how does this article meet your criteria as a reliable resource?
List out each of your criteria and include the information you found about it.
Use concrete, specific facts to support your claims.
Each annotation should be at least two paragraphs but no longer than three paragraphs per
article, and should cover the required details sufficiently. The evaluation part is worth the
most points and should discuss each of the criteria you listed in section I-B in detail.
Resources
❏ Grading Rubric: This will outline the grading criteria for each section of the project.
❏ Review the Roadmap – Research Strategies document.
❏ Review the Roadmap – Annotated Bibliography document.
❏ Citations: Use citationmachine.net or easybib.com to create your citations, keeping in mind that you may have to add information that is missing.
❏ Example: Review my example of what your bibliography could look like. You may only use one of the evaluation resource references I list on my example. The other two need to be
ones you find on your own.
Curation Tools
Most people will probably use a Google Doc to create and share their project. However, extra
credit points may be available for students who explore creative ways to display the content they
are developing. There are many possible ways to curate your list of articles. eLink, Diigo,
Pinterest, Google Slides, Webjets.io, are just a few of the options. As long as the project covers
all of the requirements clearly, it will be considered.

Timeline
1. Week One: Rough Draft Week. Project is assigned and discussed in Zoom. Part I evaluation sources are reviews, criteria list is created, and technology topic sources are
located. Rough draft of the Bibliography is created and posted to the Peer Review forum by
midnight on Sunday.
2. Week Two: Peer Review Week. You will then post constructive comments to at least three other classmates. It is strongly recommended that you review comments made to
your original post and use that as a starting point for revisions to your final project before
submitting it for grading.
3. Week Three: Revise and Submit Week. Review comments from the forum and make revisions to your project as recommended. Publish your final paper and create a tweet that
includes the link, topic, and #vvccis101 hashtag. Add the direct link to your tweet in the
footer of your project.
4. To Submit: You will save your final annotated bibliography as a PDF file with the file name “CIS101_lastName_firstName_EvalSources” and upload it to the “Evaluating Sources (Part 2-file upload)” assignment by the deadline.
